Victims
Sandra Lee Long, 29
Frances Mary Kiefer, 44 [confessed to]
Brian Steckel was a despicable excuse for a human being. He raped and killed Sandra Lee Long, then set the bed she was on on fire. She actually died of smoke inhalation. During his trial, he sent a copy of her autopsy report to her mother, with a note saying, “Read it and weep. She’s gone forever. Don’t cry over burnt flesh.” During his trial, mind you. And there were death penalty opponents who thought he could do some good if he was allowed to live. But of course, none of those people said anything about Sandra Lee Long and what she suffered. What her loved ones continue to suffer to this day. Sometimes punishment just needs to be punishment. Not something to hope he can make good. He proved that he was not a good person and he even said several times that he deserved the death penalty.
While he was in prison he also mailed confessions to another murder [Frances Kiefer, a neighbor] but nothing has come of it that I am aware of. I am still including her as a victim of his, since he willingly and voluntarily confessed to her murder.

Final Words: “I want to say I’m sorry for the cruel things I did. I’m not the same man I was when I came to jail. I changed. I’m a better man…I walked in here without a fight and I accept my punishment. It is time to go. I love you people.” He told his cousin and a friend, who were witnesses at his execution, to tell his 12 year old daughter, “I said no excuses.”
